VirtualBox doesn't started APPCRACH (Solved)

Post by Evereste »

Hello,

Installed under Windows 7 Home premium 64bits, it worked well for weeks running several virtual machines. I try to change the property of the network under windows to force VB to use a VPN. I'm not sure my modifications on the network are related to the issue but I can't anymore start VirtualBox manager. I get the following windows crash :

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: VirtualBox.exe
Application Version: 4.2.18.0
Application Timestamp: 5229ca20
Fault Module Name: ntdll.dll

Additional Information 3: 59f5
Additional Information 4: 59f55296abdcbf3d2ab7b196edf6d379

- I tried to go back in initial network setting of windows
- I tried to uninstall and reinstall the VirtualBox

It's still not working! :?

I found topics related to APPCRACH but all while trying to start a virtual machine. For these topics VirtualBox manager was able to run and able provide log files to investigate, it isn't my case...

Any idea how to investigate this issue, please ?

Disable the network in the guest settings and see if it will boot.

Thanks for the reply Perryg.

I tried to disable the network adapter(s) on the Windows host and I wasn't able to start VirtualBox manager anyway.

By guest setting you mean that right ? Or another configuration in VirtualBox ?

Actually no but let's move on.
The actual error is "Fault Module Name: ntdll.dll" which means that the device drivers of something are probably causing the crash to start.
I usually start the repairs by completely uninstalling VirtualBox and rebooting, the install VirtualBox and reboot again.
What I can't tell is what you actually did on the host that started this issue. You may be able to to use the system restore to take your Windows back in time to a point before you made those changes and that would probably be my first suggestion.

I did uninstall and re-install VirtualBox with a reboot between each step, it is still not working.
I checked online for ntdll.dll error, some posts say it could be an error disk and to run a full CHKDSK. I did it without more result.
I checked the device driver list, there isn't one in trouble, no update have been made on any device for months.
Windows update had worked lately and installed some security update, could they be the issues ?

To use my virtual machines I currently installed VirtualBox under my Ubuntu other boot. It 's able to start and all the virtual machines too. But the USB devices showed an error message and I wasn't able to get the network and internet working with the NAT configured active in the VirtualBox and of course the internet access fine in Ubuntu. Anyway, I want to focus to fix the Windows version but it may help!

VirtualBox start with some error under Safe mode on the guest Windows 7 64 bits.
Config.sys tool was used to select different configuration of services Enable/disable until issue was located.
The issue was in an Astrill VPN service. I un-install Astrill VPN and resintall it in a guest virtual computer, which is very comfortable to use.

Solve!
