Networking

Post by dbeyes »

Hi I have a Windows 8 running virtualbox - the windows 8 networking is good however My guest Oracle Lnux 6.4 network is not working. Anyone have a basic doc or instructions on getting my network set? My network adapter 1 - attached to "NAT" adapter Type "Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop(8254oem) cable connected. When I try to ping any site I get unknown hosts.

Do either of the following reply as good?

Code: Select all

ping yahoo.com
ping 98.138.253.109
Post the results of ifconfig -a from the guests terminal

There are several ways to upload it.
If it is a desktop version you can select and copy it to the clipboard ( requires guest additions to be installed and enabled in the devices tab of VBox )
You can take a screenshot of it from the host and upload the attachment. ( may need to compress it ) But you should not need to place it in a word doc. Save as jpg or png.
or the hard way type exactly what it says.

Note: use the upload attachment at the bottom of the reply window

NAT should work when nothing else does ( to get to the Internet ) but not in the local LAN.
Give me an idea of what you are going to want to do with this guest so I can advise you further.

Off hand the only thing that would keep this from getting to the Internet is a firewall or virus software on the host.

Also post the guests log file ( as an attachment )

the only thing I am doing here is to get my oracle VM manager installed and running so I can manage my oracle vm server. I didn;t have a extra 64 bit machine to install on so I am using virtualbox to install a Linux os then install the vm manager. At this point I have a Linux install however I know that I will need to connect to the vm server so I just wanted to get basic network up.

OK so you are going to need to access your LAN and you probably should use bridged for that. Do you have a router on your LAN?

Provide the results of the following:

Code: Select all

cat /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0

So it looks like you have changed it to Bridged and the info suggests that it took and should be working. Does it?
Do you get an address like 192.168.1.* in the guest?
Can you ping 192.168.1.1 from the guest?

Your ifconfig shows 10.0.*.* and your cat shows 192.168.*.*
the 10.* is the VBox NAT address and the 192.* is the bridged address.
Select Bridged in the guest settings and see if it works. If not then you are going to need to fix the guests network config.
