VirtualBox can create and access VMDK format disks. The container format is standardized and hence should be portable in both directions.
However the contents of the disk may or may not be portable between the two platforms, you can only try it and see. VirtualBox does not always emulate the same hardware as VMWare, there are some settings that have different defaults, features such as guest tools AKA Guest Additions can cause portability problems. Some features such as snapshots are not easily portable in either direction.
