cannot share with vbox 4.2.18

With vbox 4.2.12 (?) sharing folders with the host was simple. Now, with 2.14 and 2.18, I get an error message 53 that windows tells me is related to different workgroup names. The workgroup names on the host and guest are identical, yet I
still get the error 53. Strange that there was no problem with *.12, but now with *.14 and *.18. What am I doing wrong?
