Just reinstalled WIndows 8 and VB 4.2.18 88781 with extension pack 4.2.18 88780. Both report successfull installation.

Trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 guest and getting

4.9277771 Kernel panic - not syncing: attempted to kill init!

Same config was installed before Win 8 had to be reinstalled.

Intel i7 6GB mem

Post the guests log file (as an attachment)
See Online Users Manual for the location of the file.

You could have used the "Upload attachment" tab below the text window when you were composing the reply. We prefer zip attachments if you do that.

Code: Select all

00:00:04.465388 HWACCM: No VT-x or AMD-V CPU extension found. Reason VERR_VMX_MSR_LOCKED_OR_DISABLED
You need to make sure that you have enabled hardware virtualization in you bios.
Also make sure you do not have Hyper-V installed on the host. If yo do you need to disable it.

Intel virtualization in enabled in BIOS
There is no Hyper-V listed in the activities (Control panel Add/Repove Programs and Features- Programmes et Fonctionnalités on French Win 8)

All we can tell you is what the error message is telling you: VT-x is currently being blocked by something else. Either it hasn't been enabled in the BIOS (*), or you have another VM platform running (or perhaps a system level debugger). We can't be there to check the details: It's up to you to pin it down.

(*) Users sometimes confuse the VT-d and VT-x settings in the BIOS. There is no standard wording, but the former setting is usually described as virtual I/O, while the latter often uses words such as "virtualization technology".

I'm not a Windows 8 user, however my understanding was that the whole of Windows 8 is running as a VM, in which case I wouldn't necessarily expect to see Hyper-v listed as an OS task. Apparantly there's a Hyper-v Manager applet in control panel.

The only thing the BIOS displays is "Intel Vitualization Technology" and it is set [Enabled] no VT-x nor VT-d

Tinkering with the BIOS, I set FastBoot to [Enabled], and that solved the problem!

Maybe a note of this should be tucked into the documentation.

Thanks for your help.
