Windows 8 host, XP guest, Raw partition

Hello,
I have a Windows 8 host on disk 1 of my system and Windows XP guest on disk 2. I can use the whole of disk 2 as a raw vmdk and everything runs fine.
I want to use ONLY a 100 Gb partition of this second disk as a raw vmdk. That is, the remainder of the disk should be online and visible to the Windows 8 host, while the Windows XP guest should ONLY see the 100 Gb partition.
I made a raw vmdk "vboxmanage internalcommands createrawvmdk -filename testthis.vmdk -rawdisk \\.\PhysicalDrive1 -partitions 1
This made testthis.vmdk and testthis-pt.vmdk. I added testthis.vmdk to the XP VM storage SATA controller. I used DISKPART to mark the corresponding volume as offline. That didn't work - XP never gets past the boot splash screen.
Is what I am attempting possible? I want to use the second disk for several VMs each with raw disk access to their respective partitions. Thanks in advance.
