vboxsf fails to biuld on fc20 3.11 kernel

Post by yug »

I'm new to running virtualbox on Linux, (VirtualBox-4.2.16 - rpmfusion), but the problem is building guest additions modules for the guest which is Fedora 20 - 3.11 kernel.

For the first time in my experiences with VB and Fedora Alpha it is the shared folders module causing problems not the video.

Is this a known problem with vbox 4.2.16 + 3.11 kernel?

Fedora 20 has not even reached Alpha stage. Not to mention that we don't support the rpmfussion fork.

That said you need to have a version of VirtualBox that is newer than the one you are running. 4.2.18 or 4.3.0 beta to have new enough code.

Thanks for the info.

Are there issues running BV 4.2.18 or 4.3 beta on fedora 19?

I wasn't aware that rpmfusion was a different fork.

Well betas are betas, and you know all about that running pre-alpha OSes.
I have both running fairly well but that is not to say they are perfect. I haven't see a perfect anything in years.

Oracle VirtualBox 4.2.18 works fine for me on Fedora 19. The fact that the guest additions don't build for the 3.11 kernel in 4.2.16 is a known problem ( https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/11946 ) but is fixed in 4.2.18. However, in Fedora 20 or Rawhide running the 3.11 kernel, if the guest additions are installed, X does not work properly - I just get a black screen. I don't know if the problem is with VirtualBox or Fedora.

I suspect a Gnome related screen problem as KDE desktop seems to be fine with 4.2.18 guest additions.
I have the vboxsf module loaded but haven't managed to use it yet, vboxvideo is okay so far -- this post comes from Heisenbug TC4 x86_64 running in VirtualBox 4.2.18 on Fedora 19 host.

I'll keep playing with it.

Thanks

Confirmed on Fedora Rawhide (will also check 20). Previously, I was using Gnome with gdm as the display manager, and wasn't even able to see the DM. After switching the DM to kdm, I was able to see the DM, but when trying to log into Gnome, got the "Oh no!" message. If I also switch the DE to KDE, I can log in and use it normally.

Edit: Tested on Fedora 20, this time setting the DM to sddm (which BTW is now the default DM for KDE, replacing kdm) and the DE to MATE. That works as well, so the problem does seem to be Gnome-specific.

@yug,

This topic was about fedora 20 not 19.

@robatino,

I suspect this has to do with the changes in X and VBox OpenGL not being compatible with it yet.

I just read something about wayland support in Gnome shell for fc20 --could be a link to the problem?

Anyway, Heisenbug is fc20 that is what I'm running as guest on fc19 host. Thank you for your help it's working quite good at this point.
