Snapshots:

Name: Clean Install (UUID: [redacted]) *
   Description:
Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS x64 Server Edition
Up to this point everything was fine, I am able to use the VM as expected. But then, after the installation of the VirtualBox Guest Additions 4.2.18r88780 and a subsequent reboot, the window system hangs up. Nevertheless, the system itself is fine, e.g. you can connect to it via SSH or use it directly with a terminal. When a GDM restart is tried with 'sudo restart gdm', the login screen is shown. After I enter my credentials, the input dialog goes away and the window system hangs up again. The VBox.log is attached.

This issue is reproducible: I saved a snapshot of the VM before installing the Guest Additions and tried it several times with the same result. I experienced the same issue with Ubuntu 10.10 x64.

Does somebody know how to solve this issue? Thank you for your help in advance.

What happens if you turn 3D acceleration off in the VM settings?

ps. I'm not happy that you've significantly edited the log file. While e.g. hiding your user name is common, I don't see why you want to hide entire path, filenames and VM names - debugging while blindfolded does not make the process easier. Also the log file is incomplete - please remember to end the VM session before grabbing the log file.

Without 3D acceleration the VM works fine. But it should also work with 3D acceleration enabled, shouldn't it?

I understand your point. However, please accept that the information that has been redacted contained information that I don't want to make public. If there is some information missing in order to enable you to support me, let me know.

Regarding the incomplete log: Sorry, I didn't know that I have to end the VM session in order to get a complete log.

Yes it should, but this shows that the problem may be due to bugs in the OpenGL support in the host graphics drivers.

Options are (ISTM): try to find a graphics driver update for your host, and/or (b) stick with the v4.2.16 GAs.

The changelog does show that the Linux GAs were worked on for this release, though I don't recognize why the changes should be relevant to your problem. It would also be useful if you also raised this issue in the "Discuss the v4.2.18 release" topic, linking to this topic.

Thanks for your help. I think I will just leave it turned off and maybe I will try to activated it again with future versions of the Guest Additions.

I didn't try the Guest Additions v4.2.16, so I can't confirm if the issue exists with this version too.

Thank you very much for your efforts!
