Creation of VirtualBox disk to share between two machines

Hi,

Does someone know how to create a virtual disk on a VirtualBox A to share with VirtualBox B?

This in order to "simulate" a shared storage?

Thanks for any tips.

Kind Regards.

You mean simultaneous access? Do you understand how dangerous that is? Why not just configure a host shared folder that both VMs can see?

Hi,

I mean simultaneous access, thus having a kind of "virtual shared storage" for bor VirtualBox A and B.
Probably a host shared folder would be good enough.
How can I do this?

Kind Regards.

Re-Creation of VirtualBox disk to share between two machines

Hi.

Thats's a good document, but it didn't help me :-(
Mu host is a Windows 64 bit machine, on which I have tried:
VirtualBox-4.2.16-86992-Win
and
VirtualBox-4.1.26-84997-Win
My virtual machine is a Linux Red Had / EOL 5.x 64 bit version.

It seems guest additions are not supported for Red Had abouve version 3.

With difficulties I have found an iso version corresponding to my VirtualBox version...

Even if I try it, where to find the VBoxLinuxAdditions.run (p. 8 )??

If I read further, I do not see om VirtualBox manager a "device" menu with "shared folder" (p. 13, 14)
Does someone has experience with it?

Thanks by advance.

I think you are confusing OS and kernel version numbers. The current Linux kernel version is 3.x.

When you select "Install Guest Additions" a virtual CD is mounted in the VM. On guests which enable autorun the GAs will start installing. Otherwise you must use the guests file browser to find the CD and run the installer package manually.

For detailed help see: HOWTO: Install Linux Guest Additions + Xorg config.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.
I am still very confusing.

1) My purpose:
Well, I wish to create a virtual/disk/storage/file system shared between two machines.
I want to both virtual machines when up and running be able to write to this shared storage.

2) Preparation:
I have downloaded the Guest Aditions as an iso file.
But when I the virtual machine is running (and the Guest Additions as iso file is in the CD-drive), I do not see in the VirtualBox Manager an option
"Install Guest Additions".

In the link you posted, why do I need to configure Xorg?
Can you please help me further?

Thanks by advance.

@Maarvin,

Are your guest/s servers that do not have a graphical desktop?

Yes, they have a proper graphical desktop.
The host is a W7 machine and the virtual machines are Linux (all 64 bit).

Then you have a choice of using NAS or shared folders.
The link mpack sent you will allow you to install the guest additions (in the guest) so you can use the shared folders of VirtualBox. For Redhat guests just use the Fedora example.

For NAS you need to see how to do this by Googeling NAS which will explain how to do this. Normally I use FreeNAS (as a guest) or Linux which will allow you to setup a NAS without additional guest. However this part is outside the scope of this forum, which means we can only help with the part that concerns VirtualBox, not how to actually setup the NAS or use it.
