Hi guys,

Unable to install Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit on a Windows 8 Host. After booting from Ubuntu ISO and entering the install just after selecting Language > Install I receive the following error -

This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU. Unable to boot – please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU.

I have ensured Virtualisation Support has been enabled in the BIOS and using SecureAble can confirm I have YES for Hardware virtualization on bios (ASUS H87M-Plus) and CPU (i7-4770).

Virtualbox Version 4.2.16 r86992
HostOS: Windows 8 - patched fully with windows updates / 16GB ram
Guest OS: ubuntu-12.04.2-server-amd64

Code: Select all

00:00:00.965654 HWACCM: No VT-x or AMD-V CPU extension found. Reason VERR_VMX_MSR_LOCKED_OR_DISABLED
Is something using VMX? Hyper-V?

Hi perryg,

Yes - I had Hyper-V installed. I have since removed the service and restarted, although still getting the same issue in the event log.

I then found a link which says to type the following command and restart -

bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off

(can't post the link as I don't have access yet)

I have done this but am still receiving the same error message -

00:00:00.714531 HWACCM: No VT-x or AMD-V CPU extension found. Reason VERR_VMX_MSR_LOCKED_OR_DISABLED

99% of the time it is simply not turned on in bios but you say that you have verified that. Assuming that to be true and you have disabled Hyper-V I would look at updating the bios. If this is a laptop, I have heard that simply enabling it in bios does not always work and you need to remove the battery for a bit for it to actually take effect.

Hi Perryg, I double checked BIOS and it was disabled, even though before restart it had said it was enabled in Windows and the time before that I ensured it was set to enabled. It must have switched back. This was also after I updated to the latest version of my motherboard BIOS. I will raise the issue with Asus support - thanks for the help.
