Network problem - HTTP doesn't work, other protocols do

Hi,
I installed Virtualbox 4.2.16 on my Windows 8 machine and everything seemed ok until yesterday. I can no longer open any websites in any browser (chrome, IE) but I can remote desktop into my machine via VNC and download via bittorrent. How is this possible?
I've uninstalled VB from my machine but the problem still persists. I also don't have the installer on my machine to try doing an install/uninstall. Since I can't access the website, I have to get it back on my machine another way. sigh.
