Virtual Box Doing Less

Post by mathProfessora »

Hi.

I'm a teacher and last spring before summer I made a copy of my windows.vbox as we were getting new machines.

This fall, I received my new MacBook Air 10.8.4 downloaded VB 4.2.16 and connected it to my windows.vbox from last year so I didn't have to re-install my PC programs I use (Kuta Math Software.)

I cannot
... connect to the internet (forever thinking...)
... consistently get the entire desktop (with icons and menu bar)
... have it shut down all the way (lags along the way)

Thus, I can't use any of the programs in the windows part of my computer. Any help that can get my programs back running? Thank-you in advance. I think I just wasted an hour trying to understand and get it to work.

Math Professora.

Doesn't show icons when starting up.

Hi-
Here's the log for the icons not showing up when it opens.

The host is a mac, version 10.8.4.
I am running VB 4.2.16
The guest is Windows XP.

The system is allotted 256 MB for base memory.

When I have more time later I will try to get the icons to show up (many restarts involved) and get a different crash log.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The log is incomplete - it is better to grab a log of a session that isn't still running. Also, it would be nice if you followed the suggestion to compress (e.g. zip) the log before uploading it.

As for suggestions:-

I would start by doubling that VM RAM allocation, i.e. using 512MB instead of 256MB - you could even afford 1024MB. Insufficient RAM can cause performance problems (thrashing).

I would be interested to know what size you made the hard disk. If you were similarly stingy with the disk size then that too could impact performance. IMHO, 32GB is about right, assuming your guest apps don't have onerous disk requirements.

Hi-

Thank-you for your suggestion. I changed the RAM up to 512 instead of 256.

The hard drive has 10 GB.

I'm not exactly sure when you recommend to take a log. This time, I was able to get into the program with the icons showing. However, when I try to connect to the internet (it's set on NAT because I just want to go out, I don't care about being found...) it stalls and never finishes the process. I closed it and saved it in this state and took a log. If there's a better time to do so, please let me know.

Thanks again for your help. I really appreciate it.

Here's a log for it not shutting down.

However I'm more concerned with being able to get it online and reach the internet so I can use the programs in my guest client. I probably could deal with never shutting it down. :)

Thanks again.

Is there some further information I should post to make this easier to dissect? Thanks!
