devices menu does not have "Mount CD/DVD-ROM"
devices menu does not have "Mount CD/DVD-ROM"
I have a Mac running Snow Leopard. I installed Virtual Box 4.2.16 and the extension pack. I installed Windows XP, Windows 8, and Windows 7 (all totally legal). I was able to install Guest Additions for Windows XP by going to Devices--> Install Guest Additions. But for Windows 8 and Windows 7, this menu selection results in nothing happening at all. Online I read several websites saying I should fix this by going to Devices --> "Mount CD/DVD-ROM" but this is missing from my Devices Menu. The only choices in the Devices Menu are: CD/DVD Devices, USB devices, Shared Clipboard, Drag n Drop, Network adapters, shared folders, enable remote display, and install guest additions. When I highlight CD/DVD Devices, I see 3 choices, which are Choose a virtual CD/DVD disk file, Host Drive "Matshita DVD-R uj-868" and Remove disk from virtual drive. So, how do I install Guest Additions?

The "Install Guest Additions" menu item really just attaches a virtual CD to the VM. When the guest has "autorun" disabled (i.e. Win7 and Win8) you next need to browse to the CD inside the VM, and run the GAs installer .exe manually.
Re: devices menu does not have "Mount CD/DVD-ROM"
Thanks! I browsed to the CD drive, and did not find anything with a .exe file extension, but I found something without any extension at all, named VBox Windows Additions, and I suppose that was it, because when I clicked it, it took me through the steps and installed Guest Additions. That works in Windows 7. Now if I can just figure out how to browse in Windows 8.... which I've never used till this morning....
yeah go ahead and laugh I'm loving my XP version...

That's because you have Windows configured to hide the extension from you.Logical wrote:Thanks! I browsed to the CD drive, and did not find anything with a .exe file extension

Yeah, I kind of figured that. Anyway I have all 3 versions of Windows up and running perfectly now so I can do what I need to do. Thanks again for your help.
