Win 7 on MAC display reduced to skinny ribbon on the output

Post by CLINET »

This is an odd video issue that came up today. When we boot to our Windows 7 VM running on version 4.0.4 r70112, our display shows up as a skinny ribbon of output in the middle of the screen going full width across. This seems to have happened after hitting ctrl, C to copy (wrong key stroke I know) I can boot into safe mode and get to a normal display. However each time I try rebooting normally this happens. I'm not sure what could have caused this, any ideas?

This sounds similar to what has been known to happen if the VM is shut down while the display window is minimized. VBox gets confused and "restores" the last known window dimensions, which were 0 x 0. Luckily the host OS however imposes a non-zero minimum size.

You should be able to drag the window border to a size which allows you to see the desktop, however that will not stick. To make it stick you then need to enter Win7's display custimization dialog and select a display size other than what you were previously using - the idea is to force Win7 to register the fact that the display size has changed. Now reboot the VM and then you can change the display size back to whatever you prefer.
