problems installing liuxmint 15 on windows host

I have set up a vm on which to install linuxmint-15-cinnamon x64. This installation appears to proceed correctly and then tells me to restart to complete the installation. Durring the restart process, I get left with a black screen with some red at the top and linux mint never comes back up. I have left if from more than an hour and there is no change. I have gone through the install twice with the same result.

When configuring the VM, I indicated that the type was Ubuntu 64 bit, since Mint is based on Ubuntu. Other than that, I'm not sure what the problem could be.

Any suggestions as to what to try next?

Post the guests log file (as an attachment)
See Online Users Manual for the location of the file.

Also

From the hosts terminal/command window type VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use " " if the name has a space in it.

Note if the host is Windows you need to be in the directory that has VBoxManage.exe for the command to work.

I just shutdown the vm and then started it again. It came up and I was able to log in. I also installed guest additions. I'm not really sure that everything is correct with this. There is a message on the guest saying "Running in software rendering mode", Cinnamon is currently running without video hardware acceleration.

Is this normal in a VM, or is there a driver missing or something?

Enable 3D acceleration in the video section of the guest settings. (with the guest shut down (not saved state)

That solved the graphics issue. I am assuming that everything is working now, but it's hard to say. Is it common for their to be glitches during install like the black screen that I mentioned?
