Reassign Drive letter

I'm trying to access a USB drive on my host computer using WIN XP. When I configure a USB Generic Mass Storage Device (0100) it defaults to drive letter E: The problem is that letter is permanently assigned to a Scan Disk drive port. I'm trying to access a 500gb storage device that is assigned the drive letter G: In the old DOS days we had the command ASSIGN E:=G: That command is no longer available. How do I get my VM version of WIN XP to see my host drive G: ?

The drive letter in the OS in the vm does not need to match the drive letter in the host OS. They are completely different operating systems. I would be surprised if the vm could even see the E: drive port in the host directly.

If you capture the USB drive in the vm you are connecting directly to it, not through the host OS. The host OS will not be able to see it until you release it from the guest.

Have you considered simply sharing the files you need to see in the vm through Windows file sharing? That way both machines can see the files.

You have three main options :
- Shared folders
- Regular windows file sharing
- USB attach
