Problems with with USB to Serial Converter

I have a USB to serial converter is working correctly in the host (Windows 7) system, (I also tester it with
Docklight serial communications program, and communicates properly from host) It is at COM3.

With Windows XP Pro running in Oracle VM VirtualBox
the converter comes up correctly in the Devices menu as the top item (FTDI FT232R
USB UART(0600)) however this item cannot be selected to be enabled.

There is a specialized device ( a test pod) as the second item in the USB Devices menu, which
contains two internal USB to Serial converters that can be
properly selected and works properly. This would be a very similar device driver-wise to what I
am trying to make work here.
I would expect the other item, that I am trying to use here would behave the same way.

What actually happens here, that inside the Virtual Box the communication program fails to
communicate with the outside world, I can send data that will never get out, but I of course
cannot receive anything from the outside world. If I try to connect to the device from the
outside world, it gives me the error message shown in Windows 7 (host):
"Failed to attach USB Device".

I tried every possible setting that VirtualBox Settings dialog box would take from me and
it would not make a difference. Also I don't understand what the indicated "Port Path Not
Specified" message means, and I don't know which setting should work here.
