Issue allocating over 4gb of RAM for a guest

Hi All,
I have read through this session, but I couldn't get my answer.

My mac pro has 16 GB of memory (14 GB ) available, and I am trying to run the Oracle SOA 11g PreBuild virtual machine in my Virtual box.

However the same issue as mentioned here, the available memory size is only 4 GB. I have VMWare Fusion on this machine but it doesn't seems to have this problem and it can see whole amount of available memory. I have even try to make sure the os is 64 bits.

I do appreciate if someone can help me in this regards.

Thanks,
Rez

Hi I am attaching all info regarding to my VB and Oracle soa 11g to this post.

My comp spec: Mac Pro 1,1 16GB Memory 2x2.6 CPU - Max OSX Lion

On VMWare fusion I can go even to 8GB of my Memory, but on VBox only 4GB maximum.

As discussed in the thread, your host is using a 32bit kernel, therefore no single memory object can be larger than 4GB, e.g. the RAM allocation for your VM. You need to switch to 64bit kernel mode.

Hi mpack,
I do appreciate your reply. I am new to the Mac OSX. If you don't mind, do you know any command to help me to switch to 64 bits?

I have found the following command:

Code: Select all

sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture x86_64
but still doesn't work for me.

Code: Select all

192-168-1-4:~ root# cat /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
	<key>Kernel Architecture</key>
	<string>x86_64</string>
	<key>Kernel Flags</key>
	<string></string>
</dict>
</plist>

Thanks,
Rez

Well, this is the VirtualBox support forum, not the Mac support forum - plus I'm not a Mac user - but I believe you hold down the '6' and '4' keys during host boot. No doubt there's also a way to make it the default.

I have split this discussion from the original topic being very informative.
