Which IP address

Hi
Its my belief that when I use Video Box (mines running Win XP) on my desktop computer (running Win 7) and I start surfing the net, I'm showing my desktops IP address and not the Win XP's. Can someone verify this.

Although this is a virtual machine I very much doubt it has its own virtual IP address and has to rely on my desktop's address each time I go online.

Sorry if this seems dumb but I just wasn't sure.

Thanks a lot.

If your VM is configured for NAT networking mode then yes, all communications are routed through the host and hence the outside world sees only the hosts IP address.

If your VM is configured for Bridged Networking then it needs an independant IP address - usually the router provides it with one.

Thanks a lot for your reply.

Would you know of a tutorial that tells me how to configure the difference between NAT and Bridge Networking so I can set it up for Bridge Networking.

Thanks a lot.

The user manual has a complete chapter on virtual networking, including a good description of the available network modes.

To clarify further more : if you have a regular internet connection with a box provided by your ISP, anything connecting to the internet from your place will come from the same IP.
That would also be true if you had 2 pcs next to each other.

On your internal network, that is not visible at all from Internet.
You'll see that your VM use your host's LAN IP with the NAT setting, where it would use its own LAN IP when set to Bridged.
