It may be useful to add to this discussion: if it crosses your mind to manually create the VM from the unpacked VMDK, that will work fine, but bear in mind that the VMDK is compressed hence will limit performance and what you can do. The best method is to clone the disk to VDI format first (VBoxManage clonehd <infile> <outfile> --format VDI), then manually build a VM around the VDI.
