Hi all,
So far I had no trouble in keeping my Oracle VirtualBox and the Guest Additions up to date.
But now I don't seem to succeed. I hope one of you is able and willing to help. I have searched hard not only in this forum but could not find the solution.
Host: Windows 7, 64-bits,
Guest: Windows 7, 32-bits,
VB 4.2.16, GA 4.2.6, trying to update to 4.2.16.
Problem: the Guest Additions install process starts off OK, from the virtual CD-player in the guest system.
But it stops the process with the following message:
(1) - ENTER: DriverPackageInstallW
(1) - Installing INF file 'C:\Windows\system32\DRVSTORE\VBoxGuest_3D1C46450F98FCC27B9B5245C5D9D88736B7CD6F \VBoxGuest.inf' of Type 6.
(1) - Looking for Model Section [VBoxGuest]...

(1) - No drivers installed. No devices found that match driver(s) contained in 'C:\Windows\system32\DRVSTORE\VBoxGuest_3D1C46450F98FCC27B9B5245C5D9D88736B7CD6F \VBoxGuest.inf'.
(0) - Installation completed with code 0xE000020B.
(1) - RETURN: DriverPackageInstallW (0xE000020B)
ERROR (e000020b): Unknown error!
Guest driver returned 2
ERROR: Could not install files for Windows 2000 / XP / Vista! Installation aborted
I have uninstalled GA 4.2.6, but I got the same error. It made the situation worse because I now have no GA at all anymore...
Hoping for advice, thanks a lot,
Kees

Re: Guest Additions "no matching devices found.."
I think we'll need to see a VM log: see Minimum information needed for assistance.

Re: Guest Additions "no matching devices found.."
Are you sure you've been installing the guest additions into the guest, i.e. not the host? I ask because the log does not show any older version of the GAs installed. Of course the old additions could have been removed during the update attempt, but we also have the error message which seems to indicate that the installer couldn't find e.g. the VBox display and VBox mouse hardware - indicating perhaps that you were trying to install them in something other than a VBox VM.
Other things I notice:
1. You only have 512MB RAM assigned to the VM, which in my opinion is a surprisingly low amount for a Win7 guest. I'm aware that, technically, Win7 can run in that memory - just like, technically, XP can run in 48MB... but in both cases I wouldn't be surprised if the VM suffered strange problems. Ideally that RAM assignment should at least double, but then you run into the problem that you an odd system: a 64bit host with only 3GB RAM, so you'll have difficulty assigning a lot of RAM to any app.
2. You have IOAPIC turned off, which is somewhat unexpected for a Win7 guest. You must have overridden the Win7 template to do this? Don't attempt to fix this now however: once Windows is installed for a particular "motherboard", you can't just suddenly change fundamental aspects of it.

Re: Guest Additions "no matching devices found.."
Thanks a lot for your valued comments.
1) I did remove the older version GA manually, in an attempt to overcome the GA install problem. So this should explain the fact that the installer could not find an older version GA.
2) I did (try to) install the GA from inside the guest - by using its virtual CD-station containing the ISO file.
3) The 512MB RAM is as "proposed" during the installation of the VM - perhaps because the host only has 3GB RAM? Based on your comment I guess I should consider to add some RAM hardware in case the VM suffers any more strange problems in the future.
4) Not sure what I may have screwed up before.....
This afternoon I uninstalled the VM and after reinstallion the problem reappeared.
I then uninstalled the VM again, and deleted all related files manually from the host system, such as the files in "program files" and in "users/...."
Then did a reinstall, including Windows 7 32-bits, and finally I was able to install the GA as it should.
Now of course I have to reinstall the programs.... all is stored in a shared folder on the host so that should be no big deal.
Problem solved for now, thanks again for your kind support.

Re: Guest Additions "no matching devices found.."
It sounds like there may have been some kind of corruption inside the old guest, though I don't know what. As to the other minor problems I mentioned, I suspect you might have installed the old guest using a WinXP template instead of the Win7 one. No big deal.
