Old virtual machines can't be added. I don't know why.

It's because the old VMs reference an old Guest Additions virtual CD file (VBoxGuestAdditions.iso) which was overwritten when you upgraded VBox. It's a good idea to eject this CD as soon as the GAs are installed, as problems of this nature have cropped up before.
If you know what you're doing you can remove references to this CD from your .vbox file (backup the .vbox file first). There will be two: near the top is a <DVDImages> section looking something like this :
Just delete the <Image ...> line entirely.
Near the end there might be a similar looking <AttachedDevice ... type="DVD" ...> section. Bracketed inside the opening and closing tags may be another <Image> line. Delete that line too.
You need a decent text editor to make the edits, one that likes Unix style text files. Notepad++ is pretty good and it's free.
