Have I been misinterpreting the issue ? Is it purely because the MacBook Pro is USB3 only ?

Are there any plans for VB to have USB3 enabled on the Mac ?

I get the same error code when using a USB stick that once worked and now does not. All of my other USB sticks still work fine. I've reformatted the problem stick and still no luck. Incidentally it is the one I really use most often (not that it matters). I think what triggered the problem was that I attempted to update Virtual Box, but the update failed, so I had to reinstall the old version (can't update past 4.3.0). Although I started on 4.2.10, I believe. Haven't tried reverting back though.
The other sticks that work are various formats FAT16 and FAT32, although they all show up as "SMI Corp" and this one shows up as "unknown". I have a 2012 MBP running 10.7.5, with usb 3.0 and using guest OS Windows 7.
