USB NS_ERROR_CALL_FAILED (0x800706BE)

Post by SergioR »

Hi Everyone

I'm running Mac OSX version 10.8.3 as a host and Window 7 64bit (storage memory 25 GB) as a guest.
I have installed VirtualBox version 4-1.2.16, the VirtualBox Extension Pack 4.2.16 and the relative guest additions. Processor 1CPU
The USB has been added in the list of the USB ports. USB Controller, USB 2.0 (EHCL) Controller and the Filter are enabled
The USB is a Seagate Backup. I have not specified a port in the filter (according to a previous post).
I turn on the guest and then I plug the USB. I can see the Seagate Backup among the USB devices attached but it is not visible as external hard hard-drive in my guest Computer.
As I try to open from the list of the attached USB (low right), a window pops up with the following message: "Failed to attach the USB device. Unknown device to the virtual machine - Callee RC: NS_ERROR_CALL_FAILED (0x800706BE)"

Does anyone know how can I solve this problem?

Let me know if you need more information
Thank you very much

I have the same issue, with 2 external USB drives, One Western Digital (250Gb) the other Toshiba (500Gb)

Smaller devices (USB pens) work.

I am also running Mac OS X 10.8.4

After the failure no USB devices are accessible. any more.

But there was no bug report as far as I could tell, so no one has fixed it. If you had already entered one have you go the number ?

Or do you want to add all that info to the one I created ?

I'm not sure why my searches did not bring it up, maybe because it was so old ? :-)

Ok, what do we do to raise the profile higher ? This is not a one off issue and you have shared a shed load of info, no one appears to have picked it up to look at. FWIW the testing I did yesterday trashed my WinXP guest drives, so I need to pull back my backups.

And why I do not use VirtualBox anymore, though I keep hoping it will get fixed

As I still have a requirement to use it on my other platforms, Laptop and Desktop (both Solaris 11), it makes sense to use it on the Mac, I don't want to go down the Parallels route. The drives I want to read are ZFS formatted, so what seemed like the simplest and easiest solution is no longer that.

Hi all,

to resolve this issue use hdd connected via usb 2.0 (hdd external case with max USB 2.0 support), NOT usb 3.0.
I use simple cable USB 2.0 Male to SATA 7+15 Pin Adapter Cable for 2.5" SATA Hard Disk Drive.

regards,

Really strange...
In ports settings (on virtual machine) i have enabled USB Controller, and USB 2.0 (EHCI) Controller, i also added new filter without specify any options.
My steps:
1 I changed ports configuration
2 I restarted virtualbox app
3 I started my virtual ubuntu
4 (When ubuntu booting was complete) I plugged my hdd via USB2.0 cable. After that, all of hdd partitions were read/write.

Described error - NS_ERROR_CALL_FAILED - occure always in my virtualbox, when i connect hdd via USB 3.0.
@YTC1 Did you try connect usb the same way ?

USB 3.0 is not supported (yet).
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.
