VB causes kernel panic after upgrading to 4.2.16

I just upgraded to VirtualBox 4.2.16-86992 to run a Linux VM and upon starting the VM the host has a kernel panic and restarts. I tried several times.
After downgrading back to 4.2.12-84980 the kernel no longer panics.
The host is a Mid 2011 MacMini running up to date Mountain Lion.
