You are fantastic! IT WORKS!!! :D You are unbelievably patient. Thank you so much. The programs are there and installed -- I didn't expect that. All I have to do is reactivate Windows (and delete the unneeded VM). Thank you again.

@loukingjr It's no less true than it was then. I'm still asking and you're still answering, right? Like this:

Does it matter whether I trash the VMs folder & contents from Applications folder or from VM Virtual Box Manager? Will "remove [WindowsXP]" trash it or place it somewhere else?

"Delete all files" or "remove only"?

then you can just restore that one, resize it and enlarge the partition using gparted as I mentioned above.

I think you'll soon find that 10GB as too small for the hd of an XP VM. It needs to be twice that IMHO if you want to avoid congestion, poor performance, and mysterious failures during Windows updates. When the time comes, be sure to read the Howto|Generic forum for info on enlarging a disk.
I am following the instructions on the forum. I think I've successfully completed step 1 (resize drive). After a few tries in Terminal, I finally got no more error messages. Now the problem is step 2 (Extend the primary partition to include the new drive space)..
Download the Gparted live cd or what ever partition manager program you wish

I believe these instructions are for Windows. Is there a way to do this with Boot Camp? Is there a safe, free app for Mac host/windows guest I can use?

Can you please share with me what you typed into the terminal to expand the size? I am getting error message after error message when I think I've fixed the cause of the error, there's another new one!

This is what I have:

/Applications/VirtualBox.app/Contents/MacOS/VBoxManage modifyhd “/Users/lindsaygrant/VirtualBox VMs/WindowsVM/WindowsVM.vdi” –-resize 35840

I have it in quotes because I have a space between "VirtualBox VM" and apparently the terminal doesn't like the space? -- someone else helping me with this added the extra /WindowsVM/ -- my destination when I used finder didn't have this guest folder listed. Doesn't seem to matter. Gives me an error no matter what I try!

Nobody can help you if you don't tell us what the error message is.
