The easy way... Drag the .vdi file to a terminal window, type VBoxManage modifyhd at the front of the path and --resize <the new size> at the end of the path and hit return.

You don't have to worry about spaces, no spaces, adding quotes etc.

edit: well I never had to resize a .vdi but on a Mac, the easiest way seems to be to drag the .vdi to the terminal, type VBoxManage modifyhd in the front of the path and --resize <the new size> at the end of the path and hit return.

the bold being what your solution said to do, and I still got an error. Help? Need to grow my guest hdd space from 25gb to 35gb

Use that exact syntax and substitute the absolute path including the name and extension. Do not begin with User/<name> in the path.
