control key not usable in squeeze guest

I installed a 32-bit Debian squeeze guest on a 64-bit wheezy host. The control key does not work in the guest regardless of whether the guest is in a console or a X session. If I try to ^X in nano, a "x" appears on the screen. I have a number of DOS and Windows guests, but this has never once happened with any of them.

Is that with the left control or right control key? If the right (default host key) have you changed it?

The left one.

The host key I changed to the right (logo) key.

I just tested the (ctrl+x) key in debian and using (ctrl+x) closes nano as it is supposed to. Did you change the keyboard mapping in the guest?

Everything is default for a USA install.
