Updating Guest Additions in Windows 7 VM

Hello everyone,

I've been using VirtualBox for quite a while and VBox keeps being updated, which is nice.
But updating the Guest Additions can be a challenge and I don't see why.

1) In Linux (Ubuntu) VM, there's no needed action: they get updated automatically.
2) In Windows 7 VM, they don't get updated automatically and "Devices-Install Guest Additions..." does not do anything.
The version shown on the small icon located on the bottom right is 4.2.12 and VirtualBox version is 4.2.16.

Since they are located on a virtual CD whose iso location never changes, we should NOT need to do anything when we download a new VirtualBox version, should we?

This is not a VBOX Problem.

Since Malware like Conficker in Windows Autostart from external devices like usb sticks or cd/dvd is disabled. No idea, it was a windows update maybe 2 years ago.

But you must only know this, then its no problem.

Start devices/install GA. And then in the guest open the explorer and start the installer with a mouse click.

I have the same problem with my VM that is running on Windows 7.

VM Version: 4.2.16.r86992

When I go to intial VM Manager and do check for upgrade, it finds extension pack needs tobe updated, and then downloads. After that, When I agree for the license, then I get the following error message...

The installer failed with exit code 1: VBoxExtPackHelperApp.exe: error: Failed to rename the extension pack directory: VERR_ACCESS_DENIED
rcExit=1.
Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component: ExtPackManager
Interface: IExtPackManager {3295e6ce-b051-47b2-9514-2c588bfe7554}

Please make a new post. Do not attach your request to an unrelated post.

Gust additions and the extension pack are not related.
