How to enable drag'n'drop?

Post by JCG »

I am trying to run VirtualBox on my Mac. My purpose is to install a database app -HomeBase3 - for my used book business, which is only available in Windows. Here are the particulars: Host - Mac OSX 10.6.8, Guest - Windows XP Pro, VirtualBox 4.2.16. The Windows XP opens. I want to enable drag and drop, but I can't get it to work. The manual says I must install Guest Editions, but the Windows Installation Wizard shows this warning: "VirtualBox Graphics Adapter has not passed Windows logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP." I continued anyway, and the installation seemed to be complete. But after reboot and setting the pulldown menu to enable drag and drop... no go. Can anyone help? Much appreciated. - JCG

Drag and drop is not supported to a Windows guest. Linux guest only, and only host to guest. Use a shared folder to transfer files between host and guest.

Thanks, but how do I do share folders? I'm trying to get a service pack update into the Windows machine. Right now the exe file is sitting on my Mac desktop. Please pardon my ignorance, but I'm way over my head here. -JCG

As a last resort, the user manual sometimes helps. E.g. Section 4.3: Shared folders. I can't put it as simply and completely as it does.

If you need to ask another question then please include a VM log file as a compressed attachment. For details of how, see Minimum information needed for assistance.

That patronizing attitude is just what I was afraid of. You have no idea how intimidating this stuff is to non-computer geeks. Don't worry - I won't trouble you with any more naive questions. I only hope you are treated better if you ever have to stray out of your own narrow expertise. - JG

I consider that I'm here to help people who have genuine problems, not to act as an interactive user manual for those who are too lazy to read the documentation themselves. I'm sorry if my irritation was obvious and hurt your feelings, but I'm not apologetic about my own feelings. I know you are busy, but do remember that so am I, and so are the other volunteers here.
