"Still waiting for root device"
Host is an iMac8,1 running 10.7.5 VirtualBox 4.2.16 I want to install Leopard on a VM. I created a VM for "Mac OS X" and booted it with the Leopard DVD. Result:
And the log:
A little research suggested maybe the chipset, so I changed from ICH9 to PIIX3 but got the same result.

Re: "Still waiting for root device"
According to the log, your host is an iMac "Core 2 Duo" 3.06 24-Inch (Early 2008) model. The dmg file is named "Leopard 10.5.0", but the earliest Leopard that runs natively on that iMac would be 10.5.2. Is this just a typo in the naming of the dmg, or is it actually the 10.5.0 release?
Also, when creating the VM, did you choose Mac OS X (64 bit) as the Version in the General setting, Basic tab?

That matters in a virtual machine?rpmurray wrote:According to the log, your host is an iMac "Core 2 Duo" 3.06 24-Inch (Early 2008) model. I believe the installer is 10.5.0 I'm not having any luck finding a more recent Leopard installer.
Yes, it's 64 bit.Also, when creating the VM, did you choose Mac OS X (64 bit) as the Version in the General setting, Basic tab?

Re: "Still waiting for root device"
In this case, yes. The Leopard OS X installer does a check to verify that the CPU ID is for a CPU that was supported at the time the OS was released, and that the Mac Model Identifier is also for a Mac that was supported at time of release. At least through VB 4.0.18 (I haven't tried this with any newer versions) the host CPU ID was presented to the OS installer you were running in the VM. So basically if you couldn't install the OS natively, you were also blocked from trying to install it in a VM.jnojr wrote:That matters in a virtual machine?
Did your iMac come with it's original Leopard OS X install discs?
I've verified that the Darwin Kernel Version 9.0.0 in the screen shot you posted matches up with Leopard 10.5.0. If you don't have the original Leopard OS X discs that shipped with the iMac then you'll need to find retail versions of 10.5.4 or 10.5.6, or update the DMG that you have to at least 10.5.2. Versions 10.5.2, 10.5.3 and 10.5.5 are only available as updates for existing installs, except in the case of Macs that came with those versions as restore discs.

Re: "Still waiting for root device"
The bottom line is, you can't run a version of OSX in a VM that won't run on your machine natively, as was stated.

How would I update the .dmg?rpmurray wrote:I've verified that the Darwin Kernel Version 9.0.0 in the screen shot you posted matches up with Leopard 10.5.0. Re: "Still waiting for root device"
I believe you have to be running the version of OSX that you want to create to use InstaDMG.

Thanks for the input, all! I'm still trying to locate a newer Leopard installer.

Re: "Still waiting for root device"
Just to close the loop here... I located a 10.5.8 installer and I could move forward. Now I have a different problem, but that's for another thread...
Re: "Still waiting for root device"
I had similar problem "Still waiting for root device" with
VB=5.0.14 r105127
Host=El Capitain, 10.11.3
Hardware= iMac Late2013, 8GRAM, Nvidia gfx
Guest=10.6.3 (Snow Leopard)
Install media: a .img file that I extracted from the 10.6.3 install DVD
I then tried installing from the DVDread/disk itself, and things are proceeding smothly.
Just as an aside, I originally got locked in a loop where Virtual machine locked up at the beginning of the install attempt when I pointed it to the DVD reader. A reboot fixed that.

Re: "Still waiting for root device"
I fixed this:
- System -> Motherboard -> Chipset: ICH9
- Storage -> Storage Tree -> *MAKE SURE YOU ARE SET TO IDE CONTROLLER* -> Click on *.vmdk image device -> Attributes -> Type: ICH6
-- Side note: My default settings were SATA controller, which I removed and installed the IDE controller...

Re: "Still waiting for root device"
Aaron,
OSX installs are only supported (officially) on Apple hardware. See: Important notice regarding Mac OS X as Guest. I had to remove the majority of the instructions as they were bypassing Apple's licensing agreement.
