Discuss the 4.2.16 release

Post by frank »

Discuss the 4.2.16 release here.
You can download it from here.

Most important is the OVF import fix. VBox 4.2.16 should now work on Windows 8.1 hosts and the 4.2.16 Guest Additions support Windows 8.1 guests.

Glad you have a new release out, but now switching to fullscreen (at least in Ubuntu 13.04) force-aborts whatever VM it's invoked in. I doubt this release will last long unless it can be patched.

Installing it promptly crashed my network. I was unable to do anything on the internet. Un-installing returned everything to normal. I'm going to try using the previous version.

Well, I spoke a little to soon and neglected to mention I'm running Windows 8.1 on a new this year system with 16 GB of RAM. VirtualBox 4.2.14 refused to install at all. The green line moved to about 3/4 of the way to the end then just sat there making no progress for more than 15 minutes. Clearing out all traces of VB with CCleaner, doing a hard reboot, then trying to install 4.2.16 causes the green line to proceed to the end. But it leaves a situation where none of my browsers can find any internet pages. The Internet appears to be down but my Apple, Kindle, and similar devices can all find it. Clearing out 4.2.16 returns my PC to normal. But now I have no VBox virtual machines. Bummer. Please recast and re-issue this bad distro.

This has happened a few times with previous versions. VirtualBox has issues installing in UAC environment i think (Win7 x64 logged in as admin). It asks for elevation and i press ok, but after the installation i get Windows message that a program might not be installed correctly and indeed when i launch VirtualBox it still shows 4.2.14 in the About box. I then rerun the installer and do the same elevation when it prompts, and the second time it installs ok. I do not run installer through Run as administrator context menu as installer should be wise enough to ask for elevation when needed and complete the installation.

Hi,

since 4.2.8 I receive problems with installing my guest addition. The installations from the device menu does not work. I read the threads but didn't manage to get them installed. Now with 4.2.16 I receive the error "com.apple.installer.pagecontroller error -1" while opening VBXSolarisAdditions.pkg.
EDIT: Running OSX 10.8.4. as host and WIN7 as VM

Thanks.

It seems getting poor and poor on Command Line mode (FreeBSD), after upgrade to 4.2.16 it even could not connect to phpvirtualbox web management console (4.2.14 still work perfectly), on 4.2.14 it already could not self assign VNC port number instead of autoprobing the VNC port to 5900

Windows 8.1 is not yet released and as such is not a supported host OS for VirtualBox at this time.

OS: Host: W7SP1 Pro
OS: Guests: Ubuntu 12.04 dev, Ubuntu 13.04 Studio, and Mint 15 dev.

No noticed problems with any after installing vbox as Admin, and then extensions as me, and tools on each instance.

Note: Each guest OS had all updates (to today) installed before installing the guest-tools.

I didn't see any existing topic addressing this specifically, so:
vbox on OSX Mountain Lion, Ubuntu Studio guest.

Everything fine on 4.2.12, 4.2.14. I installed 4.2.16 and experienced the following:
- Guest window would resize in scale or non-scale as before, but contents remained original size (Ubuntu screen stayed small, tho guest screen would stretch).
- Cursor behavior was incorrect. Cursor had to be clicked to appear when moving between guest and host, regardless of the mouse integration mode. And cursor position did not correspond between the two.

I did install guest additions and extensions.

I went back to 4.2.14, and things are good (I notice my guest additions are still 4.2.16, but things still work fine).

Not sure if bug or user error, but wanted to share asap incase others encounter, and if solved.

Thanks,
gpaCook

To me it seems that the Guest Additions were not active when you ran your VM on VBox 4.2.16. Could you try again with 4.2.16 and attach the VBox.log file here? I'm not aware of such a regression.

Hello.
Could you please explain what do you mean by that? Is this somehow related to *scale* mode?

Dsen: For reference, I am a new user, so my reference to "scale" "non-scale" was that I have tried those modes, and understand that they do affect the way a window resizes when you drag it. So, I just mentioned that I had tried both modes in case that might be a factor.

Frank: My gut lines up with what you say. I did hit some problems doing the additions install. Best I remember:
  • Got a message that couldn't mount the virtual disc. Asked to force mount which I tried.
Got a message that I had to be admin to proceed.
I finally logged into terminal as root and ran VBoxLinusAdditions.run in the media/VBOXADDTIONS_4.2.16_86992 directory. It seemed to run happily, and I had the 4.2.16 VBOXADDITIONS icon on my desktop (still do).

So -> That probably was not done correctly. I will try again, but I need to know: how do I know when additions is installed, and where do I find the VBox.log file?

Thanks,

Post the guests log file (as an attachment)
See Online Users Manual for the location of the file.

If the guest additions are installed and working you should be able to click ( On the guest ) Machine -> session information and see the currently installed version. The guest log file will also show this.

To see if they are working open a terminal in the Linux guest and run the following to see the various vbox* mods.

Code: Select all

lsmod | grep vbox*

Yes, as a long-term user of VirtualBox, I'm aware of your standing policy here. Let's just make sure VBox runs well when 8.1 becomes finalized. In the meantime, I'll spend my time enjoying other programs which ran fine on Windows 8 AND CONTINUE to run on 8.1.
