Slow ubuntu server guest system with apache and mysql

Hi all,

I'm using ubuntu 12.04 LTS server as an apache, mysql webserver on a mac os x host system. I installed the vbox guest additions.
Unfortunately I'm experiencing high cpu loads within the virtual machine and the webserver, if I access it via my host system, via a bridged network adapter, the response time is very slow. The webapplication files reside on the mac os x filesystem and ubuntu server access them via a shared folder setup, because I'm developing it on mac os x. If I deploy it another server it works fine. I even used to have a similar setup with a windows host and the performance was better.

Did you experience something similar?

- Sebastian

For the best answer, please read Minimum information needed for assistance.
My first guess would be that your guest does not have enough RAM.

noteirak, 2 GB should be enough? Right? The software ran on a much slower server before, that had only 1 GB RAM

Why ask us to continue speculating? Provide the requested info and we won't have to.

Hi mpack thank you for your reply. I already provided them in my first post, so I asked him again.

My virtualbox guest system (Ubuntu 14.04 Server) inside my XUbuntu 14.04 host machine was really, really slow until I enabled the HW virtualization in BIOS. In my case, on an American Megatrends BIOS it is called "Enable Secure Virtual Machine Mode (SVM)". After doing so, the Apache / PHP / MySQL response time was devided by 20 or so.

That can't have been the issue here. HW virtualization (VT-x/AMD-v) is compulsory to run a 64bit guest in VirtualBox. Without it the guest wouldn't only be slow, it would refuse to run at all.

There were too many imponderables in the OPs problem description (e.g. quantify slow? how do we know it wasn't network problems? some background task stealing bandwidth?) to enable much in the way of useful advice. In such a situation the best thing is to use available guest OS tools to find out where all that CPU or I/O time is going. It can't just disappear - something must be using it.
