File delete error on Shared Folder from XP Guest

Post by Eric Ducos »

I have had the same issue for a couple of years with a Windows 7 64bit host and a Win XP 32bit guest that I cannot delete host files that are in shared folders from the guest.
The error is usually:

E:\ is not accessible (or Z:, or I: or whatever...)
Incorrect function

I check for resolution every time I update VBox but the problem remains.

Today I just got a new machine with Windows 7 Professional 64bit. Installed VBox 4.2.14, loaded my WinXP 32bit guest VM, updated guest additions in the guest to 4.2.14.
- I created a shared folder (e.g. C_DRIVE)
- Didn't use automount this time since posts in a similar thread ("rename/delete error on Shared Folder from XP Guest") in the Linux hosts forum hints that that's what causes the problem
- Mapped a drive with

Code: Select all

net use E: \\Vboxsvr\C_DRIVE
- used the first available drive, last available drive, or anything in between, with the same result.

If I go into my mapped drive and either right-click on a file in that drive (or any of its subdirectories), explorer in the guest seems to hang. If I try to left click on a file and delete it, I get the exact error that has already been reported.

One thing I noticed - which may be a hint - is that the same problem occurs if I do the same thing as above directly from the share (instead of going through the mapped drive). So the mapped drive may not be the cause but simply suffering from the same symptom. It's the shared folder itself that has the problem I think.

Any additional ideas would be welcome. I am not going to die if this doesn't get fixed right away - been dealing with it for 2 years - but it would be nice to see some progress on this. It seems like such a basic problem.
Thank you!

If you have a very precise and reproductible step by step to reproduce this issue, you should really report it on the BugTracker.
You should first check if a ticket already exists for this and add to it, or create a new one. Make sure you include the VM log file, or the point will not be treated by the Devs.

noteirak: OK - I can do that. It is definitely reproducible. I first researched the bugtracker for existing submissions on this. It looks like it may be a duplicate - or a slight variant of bugs:
- #5071 "Shared Folders: "The Parameter is incorrect" when deleting files from an XP guest to an OS X host"
- #3458 "Shared Folders failing on access"

If you still recommend to proceed and create a new bug I'll do it and provide all the surrounding context I can on this issue...

@Eric Ducos -- I've been having the same problem for some time. Whenever I get the file delete error, I just disconnect and reconnect the shared folder inside the guest OS. After one or two tries, I'm usually able to add/modify/delete files with no issues. I was wondering if you could try it to see if it's repeatable on your setup. I have XP guest running on a Win 7 x64 host. By the way, I turned off auto mount.

Good luck.
