Windows 8.1 is a prerelease (beta), not supported by VirtualBox as either guest or host.

Yes, there is a problem with virutalbox on windows 8.1, it is not just you. While VB worked fine on windows 8.0, no luck on 8.1.
From what I have been able to google up, the solution is VMWARE software, it seems to work on 8.1 hosts just fine (so they say), must be a difference in the approach to how it runs on the host because I doubt they did anything special for 8.1 yet.

Don't be foolish. Win 8.1 is beta software, you can be sure that VMWare will not be supporting it yet either. But by all means go there.

I don't think anyone is asking for either Oracle or VMware support. We understand how vendor support policies work (or don't). The point was there is a potential solution to using Win 8.1 as a host for virutalization software, it is up to the individual if they choose to attempt to do so. If you think it is foolish for someone to want to experiment with virtualization on 8.1, keep that thought to yourself, or is that the opinion of the Oracle organization you are representing? Somehow I doubt it.

Nobody here represents Oracle (except the devs who occasionally post here). Most answers posted here are from VirtualBox users who voluntarily assist less experienced users. If you are unhappy with the replies, too bad, but they do not represent the opinions or Oracle or the VirtualBox developers.
