Install Programs To Host HardDrive

im trying to install a program through virtualbox because i cannot install it in windows 8. when i choose the path to install the program, it doesnt let me choose my actual hard drive. I have it set up through devices in virtualbox though. How can i install it to my actual hard drive through virtualbox?

What is the host, what is the guest, what are you trying exact?

Normally you mount a cd/dcd to the guest and start the installer in the guest. Or you download some thing from the net.

What is your approach?

Simulated PCs use simulated hard drives, not actual ones.

but cant you install something to the actual hard drive if you set it up to share in the devices?

Sure, if you set up a shared folder and the app installer allows you to choose a network path, then it can probably be done. I don't think its a good idea, plus I can't think of any good reason for it doing it. You will not be able to run the software directly on the host, so why store it there?

what i was trying to do is install Riven thru virtualbox because the setup doesnt let me run it in windows 8. I was going to use virtualbox to install the game to my actual C drive and play it thru there. but it didnt seem to work. It wouldnt let me choose the drive even though i had it shared

Not a good idea to use VBOX for gaming.

If you install it, you have to use it in the guest. In the guest you have to install the guest additions in safe mode (for XP guests). Please read the manual for installing the additions and activating 3d in the guest.

@kyledawg111 : what you are trying to do will simply not work. There is more than just file copying when you install something, that's why it's called Installation
Virtualbox is just like having another computer next to yours. Nothing more. It doesn't do anything magical. Virtualbox is a hardware simulator!
