Redhat 6 Guest on OSX Host

Still a rookie at the vbox thing but hoping someone can help. I am trying to create a hosted environment under redhat 6 (Apache)
and I would like to connect to it from the OSX Browser.
I followed a set by step at this link htp:/christophermaier.name/blog/2010/09/01/host-only-networking-with-virtualbox
using the exact same setup but I am unable to ssh into the redhat VM....I can ping the ip which gives me a response...so I assume
its working but does anyone know why I can't ssh into it. Disabled the firewall in the VM. Not sure what else to do. My goal is to make
sure I can talk to the VM before I keep getting to far into the install under Redhat, in case I have to change ips.
Can anyone help point the way ?

Sounds like you need to allow ssh in the guest since you can actually ping the Ip of the guest.

I thought it might be that but I confirmed that ssh is running. So I decided to instal the web server I mention under redhat in the VM. I can
hit the local webpage within the VM via 192.168.56.101 but when I try to hit it from the OSX Guest desktop via 192.168.56.1 I get nothing.
I thought based on the instructions that the 192.168.56.1 would translate to 192.168.56.101 and hit the site. Is there some type of port forwarding I need to setup ? or am I just missing it all together. Thanks

While on the host browser if you can reach the guest by using the 192.168.56.101 it is working as it should. What exactly are you wanting to achieve?
Remember host-only means exactly what it says. It allows communications between the host and guest only.

Actually, I am trying to hit the HOST from the Guest. So within the HOST I can hit the web server. I am trying to hit it via a browser on my OSX Desktop, the same desktop I am running Vbox with my REDHAT VM Booted. Ultimately I am trying to run a web server in a VM and surf it via my mac desktop. thanks for the help

Well just an update. From what I can tell it looks like I am able to hit the OSX Desktop from the REDHAT VM. So I am assuming that the Host-only adapater works 1 way and is not bi-directional. Does any one know if this is correct or am I missing a setting ? thanks

No host-only is bidirectional between the host and guest. What you are describing sounds like a firewall issue.

Well I disable the firewall in Redhat and have nothing turned on in OSX... not sure where else this could be blocked.

If you can ping *.1 from the guest and *.101 from the host the network connection is active. After that it has to be an issue with the host or the guest setup.

Just wondering, is there anything I need to do with port forwarding 80 ?

Port forwarding is needed for NAT. host-only resembles bridged. So the answer would be no.
More than likely the port/s are being blocked, You can use wireshark to see for sure the network traffic and what is happening.
