Configuring host-only to work on a laptop running VPN

Hello,

I have a windows XP laptop, running VirtualBox 4.2.x

I am running a CentOS guest in bridged mode which I am hosting on my Windows desktop. From Windows, I can then SSH into CentOS via putty.

The issue I am having, is that I need to use my VPN connection for work. When I connect to my VPN session, I can no longer access my CentOS guest. Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction to have both working at the same time?

Thanks!
Barry

Your VPN client changes your network configuration, routes in particular, in a way that EVERYTHING is sent directly to the VPN.
This is not a Virtualbox problem. I would contact your VPN provider at work but usually this is done on purpose to prevent use of external items while you're connected.
There also could be some config in the VPN client to prevent this.

What I would try is to give up on bridged mode. Run your host VPN on the ethernet connection and use host only to access the vm from the host.

Thanks for the quick replies, very much appreciated!

I do have two connections, the first one is nat'd (which of course does connect to the internet when I have my VPN on my laptop running), and the second one is bridged (which does not work when the vpn is connected).

I am using a Cisco VPN, and have turned on the 'Allow LAN access', which I hoped would work, but did not.

Has anyone tried any other connection types? Or, even better know specifically what to ask our IT folks?

Thanks!

Activating "Allow local LAN access" for a Cisco VPN must also be allowed on the server side.
Otherwise the VPN server will ignore this setting.
