Windows 8 createrawvmdk error

Post by Pyroguy »

Trying to setup to use a raw disk with no luck. Following the manual, Chapter 9. Advanced topics. Advanced storage configuration. Using a raw host hard disk from a guest.

I am running an elevated command prompt with this command

Code: Select all

VBoxManage internalcommands createrawvmdk -filename "C:\rawdisk.vmdk" -rawdisk "\\.\PhysicalDrive0"
, and I get the error "Failed to create the VirtualBox object! Code CO_E_SERVER_EXEC_FAILURE (0x80080005) - Server execution failed (extended info not available). Most likely, the VirtualBox COM server is not running or failed to start."

This error doesn't make any sense. Searches have yielded a few dated results. Anyone have ideas?

You are trying to mount the Windows boot drive as a raw disk? You can forget that. Even if you get past the protection, it simply isn't possible for two PCs to both own one disk drive. The results would filesystems out of sync - at best. At worst the drive contents would be destroyed. Use shared folders instead - search the user manual for details.

In other words: Its only a function for people knowing 100% exact what they are doing! Its not something to play it.
