Failed to Attach USB2.0 WLAN Adapter

Software: VirtualBox 4.2.14 (extension pack installed)
Virtual OS: Backtrack 5r3
OS: Windows 7 64bit
Hardware: Sabrent NT-WGHU (rtl8187)

This adapter will attach to VMWare, but it won't work properly with BackTrack in VMWare, so I decided to try VirtualBox.

The wireless adapter will not connect to virtual box. Error is that it 'failed to attach' and is 'busy with another operation'. I've tried in all USB ports. I've tried creating a filter. I've tried creating a blank filter with no details.

I assume there is no solution. The fact that the adapter doesn't work properly with Backtrack 5r3 in Vmware suggests to be it's just a problematic adapter. I prefer to play with the pentesting in a virtual operating system for convenience (multitaksing in windows while playing).

Does anyone have the exact same wireless adapter and have you managed to get it to attach in virtual Box?

Billions of posts and zero solutions. I'll try to record what happens with various suggestions.

turn off your host, unplug the USB device, then boot your host, start your VM, and only when your VM is started, plug the USB device.
Any luck this way?
Adapter eventually shows up as 'State: Busy'. Can't see it in VM. Clicking on it makes it show up as 'State: Captured'. It never has a check mark beside it though and is never visible in VM. Clicking on it while it is 'captured' with no check results in the following error:

I found the solution after installing VMWare Workstation for evaluation and discovered I had the same problem mounting USB devices with VMWare Workstation. The solution requires the removal of an "UpperFilters" entry in the Windows 7 registry. Removing this entry fixed both VMWare Workstation and VirtualBox USB functionality. Here is a link to the fix. http://mooremn.wordpress.com/2010/06/27 ... -disabled/
Didn't apply to me. I went to the area of the registry and there were no 'UpperFilters'.

Hello everyone. I had the same issue when trying to capture a 500gb ext usb disk (virtual box version 4.2.6) on my laptop (Toshiba L850).

I tried many of the solutions on the net with no success. The problem was solved when I attached the disk to a usb 2.0 port instead of the usb 3.0 I was trying till now.

Hope this helps someone having the same issue... :)
The problem persists. It doesn't matter if I use the USB2.0 or USB3.0 ports.

The next problem was to get the USB devices working in the guest and here is the procedure I followed.
1: Open the Device Manager and Task Manager at the host.
2: Close VirtualBox completely and kill processes named VirtualBox.exe and VBoxSVC.exe in the Task Manager.
3: Remove the USB device and make sure it is not in the Device Manager.
4: Connect the USB device at the preferred port which is the one to be used in the future, and check the Device Manager again.
5: Start VirtualBox and the guest.
6: In the guest open the Device Manager and attach the USB device from the VirtualBox menu.
7: VirtualBox might now install a driver for routing the device. If so, install the driver and repeat from point 2.
8: When attaching the USB device in the guest keep an eye on the Device Manager in both the host and the guest. At the host, the device should detach and at the guest attach.

9: If still a problem try to repeat from point 2 and reboot the computer.
This didn't solve the problem. VirtualBox never attaches the wireless adapter. VirtualBox never attempts and installation and the USB device never detaches from Windows 7.

Do you have the extension pack installed?

Yeah, it is installed. I think it just has something to do with the wireless adapter. I'm going to sell the one I have and look for one a bit more dependable. VirtualBox has no problem attaching my webcam, usb hard drives usb wireless mini receiver, etc. It's just the wireless adapter.
