VM on secondary HD or even external HD

Hi

I have a MBP (late 2008) run Mac OS X 10.7.5 and VBox 4.2.12.

I consider to install an SSD instead of the optical drive and keep the old mechanical HD
and make the machine boot on the SSD and have that as the primary HD or how to put it.

The I plan to use the mechanical HD as the place for my VMs. Will it work to have the VMs
on the secondary HD?

To stetch further - can I have my VMs on an external HD connected through USB (or even Firewire
that I have on my MBP). The VMs tend to take space and need a different backup policy than the rest...

Yes you can, but make sure the whole VM folder is there, not just the disks.

Thanks for your comment, but could you be somewhat more detailed.

I thought the VBox application so to speak should be on the SSD, while the file it operates on should be on the mechanical HD or even on an external HD. And I plan to use VBox ver 4.x where folder structure for VMs is much simplified.

If this sound reasonable, how do I do it?

If this is not reaconable I would appreciate some brief explanation of why.

If the VM you want to move is already registred in VB, simply remove without deleting files, move the folder, then add the machine again from its new location.
