Failed Install: Fatal Error

Post by Jonjo101 »

Hi Guys,

Newbie here was wondering if someone could help me out please?

I have previously installed Virtual Box onto my laptop for some University work I was required to do. I had the VM folder in my external hard drive due to lack of space on the internal hard drive. I removed Virtual Box from the laptop a while back and now need to re-install.

However, when I'm selecting the download for Windows link from the homepage it's asking me to run Virtual Box from a folder it keeps automatically generating on the C drive. When I proceed with run it comes up with an error message saying 'Setup Wizzard ended prematurely' and 'Invalid Drive: F'. I'm a bit of a novice with this software so was wondering if anyone could kindly explain to me in a not so technical manor what i'm doing wrong at all?

Thanks in advance :)

Could you post screenshots of this? I have a hard time picturing what you really mean.

Ok, well I tried to add screenshots to show you but it wont allow me to paste them and the attachment wont save because every file type I can save as says 'upload file was identified as a possible attack vector'.

So i'll describe as best I can what I can see when trying to download Virtual Box.

A dialogue box opens with the message in:

'Oracle VM Virtual Box 4.2.12 Setup Wizard ended prematurely'

'Oracle VM Virtual Box 4.2.12 Setup Wizard ended prematurely because of an error. Your system has not been modified.
To install this program at a later time, run setup wizard. Click the finish button to exit the setup wizard.'

This happens everytime I click on the windows os link on the downloads page on Virtual Box?

Try to save the file to your download folder or documents, and then start the installer. don't directly run it from the website.

When I download the file to my downloads and run it from there, the installer box comes up for about half a second then closes, then it shows: Invalid Drive F:\, followed by the message above.

Am I missing the installer? If so any idea's how i'd download it?

Could you post a full screenshot of when you get the error with the invalid drive?

Zip up any files you want to attach (.zip is an accepted extension). Pictures in various formats can be attached directly, JPG or PNG.

It looks to me like your previous installation of VirtualBox was not properly removed. It appears to have left an entry for the installation directory in the Windows Registry somewhere, which includes the "F:" drive, and which is clogging up the new installation onto C:.

One thing you might do could be to plug in one or more USB sticks so that you actually have an "F:" drive, and this might bypass the "invalid drive" check. I would guess that you could still install to C:, and it might sort itself out. No promises, but I would have thought it worth a try.

The other option would be to run a registry cleaner of some sort. (I find the Registry section of CCleaner usually does what is needed, and it is free.)
