What network settings do I need?

Post by Hello1654 »

Hello I’m going to be installing Windows server 2012 on Virtualbox and I’m going to be adding windows 8 VM’s to it. I have two questions
1. What kind of network settings should I set the Server to Nat/Bridged /internal network/host only?
2. What king of networking settings should I set for Clients Nat/Bridged /internal network/host only?

Thank you for your help.

I have no idea. You will need to tell us what you want the vms to do - workgroup, domain, Internet access or not and anything else that might be relevant.

I’m going to be leaning windows server 2012 I’m going to be installing Active Directory, DNS, DHCP to create a Domain and I’m going to be adding computers to the domain and I want the computers to have access to the internet. I’m currently following Elithecomputerguy on YouTube.

Thank you for your time

Setting up a domain structure in virtual machines is basically the same as doing it on physical hardware. You need to set the domain machines in their own network and in their own IP subnet. In VirtualBox that means setting up you domain machines on an internal network. That is all you need to set up to install and test the domain. If you want the vms to have Internet access, you need to set up some way to route this network to the Internet and make the necessary changes to DNS (just as you need to with physical machines and and networks).

So the short answer is that all domain vms should have only one NIC and use internal network setting only.

Right now I’m only using the onboard Ethernet port for all my VM’s I do have a NIC on the way that I’m going to be using it for the Windows Server 2012.Which I’m going to setup on it’s on subnet.

Thanks for the knowledge sir

You do not need another NIC to run your domain on an internal network. Just set the vms to use the internal network and use the default network name (intnet).
