Important notice regarding Mac OS X as Guest

Due to license restrictions the new Mac OS X as Guest feature is only available to users with Apple/Mac hardware, and only for "Mac OS X Server" installations as a guest OS. Any other combination is unsupported and will therefore not work. Any post that talks about a different combination will be removed without warning. Any discussions of ways to get around the Apple SLA will also be removed.

At this time VirtualBox is not officially supporting the Mac OS X Lion operating system as a virtual guest and there is no time-line when it will be officially supported. According to the released SLA from Mac you should be able to install Lion but the same restrictions apply as with Snow Leopard including Mac hardware, Mac OS only. See the link below.

I couldn't reply to this post, but I was confused.

It first states VirtualBox only runs on, "Mac OS X Server". Does this only include old seperate server OS? Will it work on current OS X that has OS X server as a add-on? Or is it even needed on current OS X releases?

Also, Will it run on the mini-mac, imac, mac pro, macbook pro, etc? with or without the OS X Server add-on?

The reason I ask is my sister's father-in-law wants a new computer and I was going to recommend a mini-mac or other, as he is tired of getting virus every other day in windows. I wanted him to have a windows app so he can fall back occasionally until he gets through the learning curve of leaner a new OS. I tried Ubuntu and it is too much for him, and every update cripples the computer graphics or other drivers.

Thanks for any advice on selecting the right Mac.

You seem to be very confused. VirtualBox runs on any Mac made in the last 4 years or so. You can only run OSX Server as a guest in VirtualBox.

If you have a Mac, and install VirtualBox, you can run whatever version of Windows you have as a guest in VirtualBox

Great, now how about 3D video support? Will I be able to play SimCity 2013?

Will I need VT-d? A lot of Intel processors don't support VT-d. Do all of the Macs support VT-d?

3D acceleration AND VT-d are experimental features, so it might work, it might not. Just try.
But I wouldn't expect to play the game properly, or anywhere near native speed.

I think all in all, this topic and your old one answers all your questions & more :
- Your setup is not supported, and not in the SLA of Apple.
- What you are trying to do with it is not supported by Virtualbox.

In fairness to Mark he does sound like he's about ten years old and doesn't seem to grasp that this is a VirtualBox forum and not a "What kind of Mac should I buy to play SimCity 2013?" forum. And locking the thread sounds like a good idea.
