install guest additions without 3d support

Hi,
when installing virtualbox guest additions on a windows 8 guest, you get a menue to select what to install.
There is an option to install "Direct3D-Support" I would like to deselect - but this is not possible.
In Win7 Systems this is available.
Is there any way to deselect the "Direct3D-Support" when installing guest additions on win8 guest?

Why not simply not enable 3D acceleration in the VM settings? If the hardware isn't present the drivers will not load.

Hi mpack,
I will tell you why:
I have two win guest systems. One Win7 and one Win8.
I have installed a CAD software on both for test purposes and buy decision. On both systems the drawing was not shown.
Now, I am a little bit familiar with CAD software (CATIA) since I work in IT Support for Engineering Systems. I know, CAD and Graphics Devices/Drivers are always a topic and CAD and virtual systems in most cases exclude each other. But for home purposes it should be sufficient.
Anyhow.
On Win7 I had activated 3D-Support in the VM Environment - and - drawing was shown - success.
On Win8 I did the same - with no success.
The only difference what I could see was the fact, that virtualbox guest additions are installed without "Direct3D-Support" in Win7 but with "Direct3D-Support" on Win8.
Therefore, I would like to create an as much as possible identical environment to see why Win8 does not do the trick.
That's the reason.

Hi all,
no one out there to know how to deselect "Direct3D-Support" during installation of virtualbox guest additions?

It is not selected by default, so I am not sure what you did but this is not the expected & normal behaviour...

In my case it is and I can not deselect it.

I am sure I just started the installation process and clicked "next".
But anyhow. Is there any way to find a registry-key or an ini-file or delete a .dll to let me come back to the point so I can select and deselect the topic?

Are you installing without any prior install of the guest addtions or are you trying to reinstall over them without uninstalling first?

Hi noteirak,
when I opened the thread I just installed guest additions again over an existing installation.
Yesterday I deinstalled the guest additions, reboot and installed again. But still I was not able to deselect Direct3D-Support.
To tell again: in Win7 I was able to deselect and as far as I remember (it is some time ago) in Win8 from the very first installation Direct3D-Support was selected with no option to deselect.
Not sure if it has to do with Win8 but it looks like.

It is very much possible this is something specific to Win8 yes. I do not have ways of testing it right now tho. Maybe someone else will and will post on this topic.

Windows 8 requires 3D to be enabled, but it installs the wddm drivers instead of the experimental 3D (wined3d) drivers. It is enabled by default and can not be disabled.

This explains my experience. Thanks for answer.
As explained, I have done this to get a CAD Software running.
As explained, in Win7 it works, in Win8 it does not and the only (viewable) difference I could see was the Direct3D.
I will open a separate thread about the original CAD problem.

Probably better to create a ticket at
bugtracker

VirtualBox 5.0.18, Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Host, Windows 10 VM, I also cannot uncheck the "Direct3D Support (Experimental)". I get a grayed-out but pre-checked check-box. I get this both in regular mode and Safe Mode and I get this regardless of whether 3D acceleration is enabled in the VM settings or not. I also get this even after going into Device Manager and manually uninstalling the VirtualBox graphics adapter.

I have this same exact problem as aaronfrank.

Please read the above thread. Particularly the mention of what Win8 (+) does.
