Netgear CG3100 + DLINK 865L Virtualbox ?

Post by p4guru »

I'm hoping someone here can help me out. I just bought a DLINK 865-L 802.11ac wireless router to be bridged with my Netgear CG3100 Cable modem. All is working well except all my Virtualbox virtualised server instances I use for server testing.

Before with working Virtualbox servers
  • Netgear CG3100 Cable modem with wireless and NAT enabled so Bridged mode
  • LAN is on 192.168.0.xxx for all connected local pcs, laptops and wifi devices
  • Virtualbox servers configured for NAT + VirtualBOX Host only adaptors on 192.168.56.xxx range. So that any Virtualbox created server CentOS mainly would have for example 192.168.56.200 ip accessible from my local pcs connected to Netgear CG3100. All this worked fine and could SSH into 192.168.56.200 server to manage it.
After with Virtualbox servers not accessible via SSH on 192.168.56.xxx ips
  • Netgear CG3100 Cable modem disabled wireless and disabled NAT
  • Added DLink 865L to CG3100 to serve wireless devices and entire local pc network on 192.168.0.xxx
LAN is still on 192.168.0.xxx for all connected local pcs, laptops and wifi devices and works fine
  • BUT Virtualbox servers – CentOS mainly are no longer accessible on 192.168.56.xxx. SSH telnet times out and doesn't connect
Local pcs are Windows 7 64BIT Utlimate based.

I am stumped and not sure if it's specific DLink 865L settings I need to configure ?

While I could switch to using Virtualbox in bridged mode to access via 192.168.0.xxx, I have 100s of Virtualbox instance snapshots on the old NAT+ Virtualbox host only adapter method, so would need to change every single snapshot over to bridged mode !

Or is there a way to change all Virtualbox existing snapshots from NAT+Host only mode to Bridged mode ?

Any ideas are much appreciated :)

Seems I have another problem as well. Created a fresh new CentOS 6.4 Guest server instance with bridged mode and can connect via 192.168.0.xxx ips fine. But seems while downloading php.net related files DLink 865L STATUS > Internet Sessions show that the connection timed out ?

I have Enable SPI checked and NAT ENDPOINT FILTERING for TCP and UDP set to Port And Address Restricted and unchecked Enable anti-spoof checking

DLink 865L STATUS > Internet Sessions show that the connection timed out ?

Code: Select all

Protocol	NAT	Internet	State	Dir	Time Out
TCP	39318	69.147.83.199:80	EST	OUT	7061
39317	69.147.83.199:80	EST	OUT	7061
39319	69.147.83.199:80	EST	OUT	7061
39320	69.147.83.199:80	EST	OUT	7062

My first question would be : did you configure routing to 192.168.56.xxx ?
You also say you cannot connect TO, but you don't say what you try to connect FROM - Wifi or cabled ?

All in all, nothing to do with Virtualbox... Basic networking rules still apply here. First thing you be to provide a very quick ASCII graph of your network setup so we would understand perfectly.

Hi noteirak and thanks for replying.

When you mean configure routing to 192.168.56.xxx from the DLINK 865L Router or from within windows ? It was already configured and working BEFORE switching to CG3100 modem in bridged mode + DLINK 865L. It should still work after ??

When I mean connect to, it was FROM cabled 192.168.0.101 PC1 via SSH telnet to 192.168.56.100.

How the diagram looks - PC1 192.168.0.101 is PC with virtualbox installed and has 192.168.56.xxx network in play.

There's a HP 1810 switch in between as the CG3100/865L modem and router are in another room from PC1 and PC2.

Code: Select all

  192.168.0.101 192.168.0.102
  +-----------+ +-------------+
  | WIN7 PC1 | | WIN7 PC2 |
  +------+----+ +-------------+
         |
     +---v----------------+
     |HP 1810 SWITCH |
     | |
     +---------+----------+
               |
     +---------v----------+
     |DLINK 865L WIFI |
     |ROUTER 192.168.0.1 |
     +---------+----------+
               |
     +---------v----------+
     |NETGEAR CG3100 CABLE|
     |MODEM 192.168.100.1 |
     +--------------------+
I did fix my timeout issue though, i upgraded DLINK 865L firmware from 1.0.1 to 1.0.3 and rebooted the router.

Could you add the Host & the VM to the graph please?
