So it says that when lauching Virtual Box , Virtual box fails to create the COM objects . START TAG "<" not found and program is going to stop

The rest of the error mmage says : "

Post the /home/caron/.VirtualBox/VirtualBox.xml file as an attachment (you may need to compress it to get past security)

This file does not exist in this location ! I've got only the folder Virtualbox VMs where the folder of my 3 Vms are ( Win98SE,Win 3.1 and Vista Basic 32-bit)

Notice the . just before VirtualBox. That makes it hidden. Turn on show hidden files in the file manager and do what I asked above.

Thank you as usual for your time and patience especially with a dumb like me !lol!
I don't know how but I succeeded in wiping out the version 4.1.18 ans replacing it by the 4.2.12 r84980 version.
All seems to be working fine unless a small but interesting detail : My physical 320 gb is partitioned in 2 and even if the partition is recognized by my linux 14 mint host , Virtualbox does not see it . I went through the tutorial to create a new VDMK disk image but as usual I failed ..... Seems strange to admit but 4.1.18 did recon my physical partition quite easily.
Your opinon and what must I do ?
By the way as you said, I also installed the proper guest -add but I am unable to edit the etc/ftsab folder ( as folder 's empty ) even if checking the "show hidden files version"

RAW access is very dangerous and should not be used by just anyone. You must know what you are doing and even then there are things that need to be considered.
For that reason I don't tutor people on its use.

Now VirtualBox itself does not see any drive, just the virtual HDD of the guest so I assume you are talking about the guest and if it is Windows you need a special driver in Windows to see ext* drives, or any other Linux formats.

Not sure what you are trying to achieve with editing the hosts file system table but the location of fstab is /etc not etc ( /etc/fstab ) and it can't be empty or the host would not boot. Type the following in a terminal to see its contents.

cat /etc/fstab

As linux 14 recognizes my physical hdd partitions, I just copied the .vdi of my 3 Vm and reinstall them in my new virtualbBox 4.2.12 ald asll's running fine now at last !!!!
But for usb , still not possible to edit etc/fstab.....

You don't edit the /etc/fstab file any more.

In a host terminal run this: Replace <your username> with the name you use to log in. Type your user password when prompted.


Be sure to log off and back in to finalize the change in permissions

You have added your name to the vboxusers group (which you must do to be able to use USB)

type id in a terminal and it will show what groups you are a member of.

This is what I get but apart in my Vista VM where I an use my usb connec dongle, I see the connected devices but unable to use them and that's what I get :
