USB in VISTA BASIC 32 BIT guest

Post by herakles »

Hi !

I am running a VM guest Vista Basic 32 bit on a linux mint 14 host ! As I'm a newbie dumb in Linux, could somebody help me about usb recognition in my Vista guest ?
To end , I will add that Guest additions work perfectly and shared window between my guest and host is fantastic ! ( I cannot do it alas from a Win98 se guest to my linux host )

I did include a screenshot about my problem but when I tried to enter the mentionned folder : NUTS , NOTHING koz there's no " visible " files in the folder . So I did include also the " error" message.

A log says more than 1000 pictures.

Post the log file. Select the guest in the VBOX Gui, right mouse button, show log.

VirtualBox 4.1.18_Ubuntu r78361 linux.amd64 (Apr 2 2013 20:31:05) release log
00:00:07.806 Package type: LINUX_64BITS_GENERIC (OSE)
00:00:07.971 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack (Version: 4.1.26 r84997; VRDE Module: VBoxVRDP)

Two problems:
  • 1) the version of virtualBox and the version of the ExtPack does not match
    2) you are running the Ubuntu repo release of VirtualBox that we do not support.
You need to install the ExtPack 4.1.18

Typing id in the hosts terminal will show you the groups that you belong to. vboxusers group is the one that you *need* to be in for USB to work for the guest/s
If you type groups you should see the same thing. If you do not see vboxusers then you need to add your user name to the vboxusers group.
If you are new to Linux and don't know how below is an example:
In a host terminal run this:

Code: Select all

sudo usermod -aG vboxusers <your username>
Replace <your username> with the name you use to log in. Type your user password when prompted.

Be sure to log off and back in to finalize the change in permissions

DEAD END !

Post by herakles »

HI again !

I'm caught in a deadly trap !
After having tried your command and installed guest additions, where I was able to connect through internet in my Vista VM even sharing folders , I got audio backend bug 6944 where NONE of my 3 VM ( Win SE, Win 3.1 and Vista ) didn't get anymore audio even if hardware was installed and apparently function well !
Of course, I tried to reinstall driver in Win 98SE : NUTS ! :?
Then I tried to uninstall and reinstall through Mint repositories Oracle Virtual Box main software- guest additions and transitional packages ! VM stopped even installing , being unable to write in user\etc\lib\virtualbox\virtualbox !
More astonishing ! I even downloaded virtualbox 4.2.26 for amd 64 from your site : NO INSTALLATION !
Have you got a " magic wand " command so that I can really reinstall Virtualbox ( when I tried through , It shows me it is installed but NUTS !!!!) by being capable to install the .run Virtualbox downloaded on your site ?
Or again must I crash all my MINT 14 through Windows 7 ( loosing all my features that seem to bulky to be backed up ) and reinstall the downloaded Virtualbox 4.2.26 ?

HELP BITTERLY EAGERLY NEEDED !

Mixing repo version and official version is never a good thing. They are far from equal. Plus there is no 4.2.26 version. The newest is 4.2.12
You need to purge the version before you install to properly remove all of the distro file or you will have conflicts.
  • sudo apt-get purge virtualbox*
    sudo apt-get purge VirtualBox*
Your data (the actual guests) are not included in the purge so no need to worry about them yet.
Install the one you got from VirtualBox.org, reboot, & see if it helps.
Don't forget the Extpack.
