I recently bought a new laptop with win 8 installed and found I couldn't install Linux to run beside it as dual boot system. Thank god for Virtual Box. I installed it and am now thankfully running Linux (Ubuntu) to my hearts content.

I now want to install Backtrack 5, but am unsure where this should go. Should I install to the Win 8 system as a normal software program or within the Virtual Box along side Ubuntu as Backtrack needs Linux to operate.

You may be able to tell that this is my first venture into Linux and Virtual Box so what better place to ask this question than here.

If you plan to use Backtrack for your integrated Wifi card, that won't be possible in Virtualbox. No wifi link is virtualized, only cabled ethernet. So depending on your goal, the options could be very limited.

Its funny you should mention that. I found Backtrack doesn't support the card in the laptop so I bought an external card (Alfa AWUS036H) which Backtrack supports out-of-the-box. Don't tell me I can't use that one either.

The only way you could have it used by backtrack via Virtualbox is if the external one is USB. Then you can pass it on via USB filters.

Pardon me for being a bit slow here, but at 67 it takes a bit longer to sink in than it did 20yrs ago.

So does the Backtrack software have to be loaded into the laptop rather than Virtual Box.

The Alfa card connects through a usb socket and its stuck to the lid. Looks a bit weird.

if your Wifi card is USB, you can try in Virtualbox.
If it is not, it's not possible in Virtualbox.

So since you tell us that the wifi card is usb, try with Backtrack in Virtualbox and read the user manual chapter about usb devices.
