[SOLVED]: Unable to install 4.2.12

Hello,
I have a quite old version of vbox. I tried to install the latest 4.2.12. It removed the old one but failed to complete the installation. I tried to manually remove the inf files as suggested in some threads. No chance.
The progress bar fills up to 100% then rolls back to 0% and I get this error:
Oracle VM VirtualBox 4.2.12 Setup Wizard ended prematurely.
What should I do to install vbox again?
Thanks in advance
EDIT: forgot to say WIndows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

If you are upgrading from any old version of VBox (i.e. different major version) then the recommended procedure is to uninstall the old software first, then install the new version.

I'm sorry, my English is not so good. Perhaps I explained wrong what I did.
I removed the old version, then I tried to install the newer one but the installation always fails.
Anyway, how to clean out all to do a fresh install?
I searched for *vbox* in the windows folder, but it isn't enough.

Hi, it's the one reported in the first message. Here a couple of images of the error:

I eventually solved removing manually all the Registry entries left by the older Virtual Box.

I have the same problem and it's
not solved for me.
I'm using Windows 7 64bit.
I tried to install 4.2.12 over an existing installation and since then I cannot install VBox any more.
I also tried the new 4.2.14, no luck.
I have removed all network cards and USB drivers using the DeviceManager and additionally I have manually remove any old drivers from the registry and the system.
The installer stops as soon as any driver (VBoxDrv, USB or Network) should be installed
The error message is:
Code: Select all

Any ideas?

Sounds like you have some issues with your certificates. You should look into your Certificate manager and see if something is odd - you should normally have the Oracle certificated trusted, and it's signatory CA, which should be a public one.

Thanks for the answer.
The Oracle certificate is available in the Certificate Manager (both for "Local Computer" and my user account), valid until next year and signed by VeriSign.
So I guess that should be OK?
Anything else I can check in the Certificate?

I also tried 4.2.16 still the same problem.
Anything else I can check/verify/tweak/patch/hack?

It is unlikely that you'll get help for your problem here. Your problem actually has to do with Windows MSI installer, and that problem is unlikely to be endemic in the VirtualBox release since other users of Windows hosts are not reporting the same problem. That means that the issue is going to be something peculiar to your PC, such as a corrupted registry, a corrupted certificates database etc. You would either have to look for support from Microsoft, or consider reinstalling your host OS.
You should also Google for "Driver Signature Enforcement" so that you can better understand the issues involved in installing third party device drivers in 64bit Windows.

It is strange though that VirtualBox is the
only installer that shows these problems. And I'm by far not the only one having this problem with VirtualBox:
*
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=22445
*
https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/11349
*
https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/3373
* and several other tickets:
https://www.virtualbox.org/search?q=+en ... &ticket=on
It only started when I installed a new version of VirtualBox over an existing one without removing the old one. Up to then everything was running fine.
That means that the issue is going to be something peculiar to your PC, such as a corrupted registry, a corrupted certificates database etc. You would either have to look for support from Microsoft, or consider reinstalling your host OS.
I already checked the certificates (and updated them as suggested in ticket #11349). The question is: what else can I check? Or can I check somehow
which certificate is broken? Checking the Signatures of the installer (using the Properties dialog of the installer) shows that Oracle certificate is OK.
You should also Google for "Driver Signature Enforcement" so that you can better understand the issues involved in installing third party device drivers in 64bit Windows.
I tried several hacks to remove the check from the installer as suggested in several of the many tickets from the bugtracker regarding this issue. This resulted in a prompt from Windows during installation if I want to install an unsigned driver. The installation worked fine after allowing the drivers to be installed, but then VirtualBox refused to start claiming that the drivers were
not installed.
